Overview

722.9 automatic transmission is very popular in Mercedes-Benz and served from 2006-2017. It has 7 forward gears and 2 reverse gears. Every 7 years/70,000 miles (made after 06-22-2010) or 4 years/40,000 miles (made before 06-22-2010) we have to change the automatic transmission fluid and filter of our Mercedes, that's requiring of Mercedes maintenance booklet. Since the model year from 2016, MB has shortened the interval of changing ATF to 6 years/60,000 mails. If your vehicle was equipped 722.9, that’s the most same process to change ATF and filter like this video, whatever made before or after 06-22-2010. For this vehicle (W212M276), the drain plug of the torque converter is difficult to operate, so I drill a hole on the shell to working easily. Something won’t happen on my W221M278. Another notice, if your vehicle made before 06-22-2010, the fluid is red and the overflow plug is withe, otherwise the fluid is blue and the overflow plug is green. Just like other maintenance, change ATF is not a difficult job, just be patient. Good luck!

Drain ATF

Step 1 Lift Vehicle

Substep:

1.1 Against the front wheel by a chock, for rear-wheel-drive car,

1.2 Jack rear vehicle at rear central jack point, if w/o rear central jack point, jack at the bottom of differential sell which  fixed at subframe carrier directly;

1.3 Support vehicle at rear side jack points with jack stands.

1.4 Jack front vehicle at front central jack point;

1.5 Support vehicle at front side jack points with jack stands, and make the vehicle in a level position. 

Step 2 Remove bottom engine compartment paneling

Substep:

2.1 Remove bolts (3, 4) (6 bolts).​

2.2 Remove center engine compartment paneling (1);

2.3 Remove bolt (3, 4, 8) (10 bolts).​

2.4 Remove rear engine compartment paneling (7)

Step 3 Remove the auxiliary oil pump (Skip this step if the vehicle w/o Start/Stop Function)

Substep:

3.1 Remove drain screw from the transmission oil pan;

3.2 Detach electrical connector (1a) on auxiliary oil pump (M42)

3.3 Detach electrical wiring harness from transmission;

3.4 Remove screws (2) and detach electric transmission oil pump (M42), for installation 8Nm (71 Ib-in).

Step 4 Open engine hood

Substep:

4.1 Pull lever on the left side of the footwell to unlock the engine hood. The engine hood jumps open; lift engine hood slightly if necessary;

4.2 Pull out handle and lift to open engine hood. (Windshield wiper arms must not be folded forward).

Step 5 Drain out ATF of torque converter

Substep:

5.1 Remove the front cover of the engine;

5.2 Turn the engine until the drain plug visible in the access hole;

5.3 Drill a hole to enlarge the access hole, (This's the design defect on this model 2013 W212);

5.4 Unscrew the drain plug to drain the ATF of torque convertor;

5.5 Install a new drain plug, 8Nm (89 Ib-in).

Step 6 Remove the oil pan of the transmission

Substep:

6.1 Remove drain screw from the transmission oil pan;

6.2 Detach electrical wiring harness from transmission;

6.3 Remove the bolts of the oil pan, x6;​

6.4 Remove the oil pan;

6.5 Remove the filter;

6.6 Clean the sealing surface of transmission contact the oil pan.

Step 7 Install oil pan after cleaning

Substep:

7.1 Clean the oil pan;

7.2 Clean the magnet chips;​

7.3 Install the new overflow plug and gasket;​

7.4 Install new filter;

7.5 Install the oil pan.

Tighten Torque

E10 Bolt

Filling ATF & Correct the Capacity

Step 8 Pump in the ATF

Substep:

8.1 Connect the refill adapter;

8.2 Pump in the ATF approx 10 liters, 8 liters for 722.93/96;

Check the model of transmission

Fluid: (MB Approval 236.14) RED

(Manufacture date since 6-21-2010)

Fluid: (MB Approval 236.15) BLUE

Step 9 Correct the capacity of ATF

Substep:

9.1 Connect MB diagnosis to monitor the temperature of ATF;

9.2 Shift through "P-R-N-D" several times on idle and braking;

9.3 Remove the adapter when 45°C/113°F of ATF, Drain off constant oil flow until only drops come out to correct oil capacity;

9.4 Install drain plug with a new sealing washer, 22Nm (16 Ib-ft).

Step 10 Ending the work & clean everything

Substep:

10.1 Install the bottom engine compartment paneling

10.2 Clean everything & clear up tools;
